Area guide
Living in Coral Gables
Coral Gables is a city southwest of downtown Miami, planned by George Merrick in the 1920s. Its Mediterranean Revival architecture, tree-lined streets and design rules still shape every new building. Miracle Mile and Giralda Plaza form the downtown shopping district.
Ponce de Leon Boulevard is the main commercial corridor, lined with offices, hotels and new mid-rise residential buildings. The free Coral Gables Trolley runs along it to the Douglas Road Metrorail station. The University of Miami campus sits in the south of the city.
The Biltmore Hotel and the Venetian Pool remain landmarks of the original plan. Most of Coral Gables is single-family housing, so new condos are concentrated downtown and around the Shops at Merrick Park.
Height limits and architectural review keep buildings mid-rise. The current pipeline adds boutique buildings with Mediterranean or classical facades and larger mixed-use projects near Merrick Park.
