West Palm Beach Explores Autonomous Transit Link Between Downtown and Palm Beach International Airport

Yoann Dorat June 30, 2026 2 min read

West Palm Beach is evaluating a new autonomous transportation system that could create a direct connection between downtown and Palm Beach International Airport, reflecting the city’s broader push to modernize infrastructure as population and investment continue to expand. The proposal centers on technology developed by California-based Glydways, whose driverless vehicles operate on dedicated guideways rather than traditional rail systems. The initial route would span approximately four miles and, if approved, could be operational within the next five years.

Unlike conventional transit projects that often require extensive rail infrastructure, the proposed system would utilize small autonomous electric vehicles running on exclusive lanes. Supporters say the model offers lower construction costs, faster implementation, and the flexibility to expand into additional corridors as demand grows. The airport-to-downtown connection is being considered as a first phase that could eventually serve a broader regional network.

The proposal comes as West Palm Beach experiences significant residential, commercial, and mixed-use development, creating increased pressure on the area’s transportation network. Improving connectivity between the airport, employment centers, and downtown destinations has become a growing priority for local planners seeking alternatives to roadway expansion. Autonomous transit is increasingly being viewed as a potential complement to existing transportation options rather than a replacement for traditional public transit.

While the concept remains in its planning stages, the project reflects a broader trend of South Florida municipalities exploring emerging mobility technologies. West Palm Beach has already gained experience with autonomous shuttle pilots in its downtown core, positioning the city as one of Florida’s early adopters of driverless transportation. If the larger airport connection advances, it could become one of the first dedicated autonomous transit corridors linking a major airport with a central business district in the United States.
